Student center - Actively engaged Different strategies According to the National Reading Panel, a comprehensive literacy lesson addresses one or more of the five essential components of reading: * Phonological Awareness: The ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken language. * Phonics: Understanding the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent. * Fluency: The ability to read accurately, with appropriate speed and expression. * Vocabulary: The knowledge of word meanings. * Comprehension: The ability to understand and interpret text. A good lesson often weaves these pillars together. For instance, a lesson on reading a passage might focus on a specific comprehension strategy (e.g., making inferences), but it would also implicitly require students to use their phonics, fluency, and vocabulary skills to access the text in the first place. 3.
