About Chiara

Hello! My name is Chiara, and I am passionate about languages, translation, and Japanese culture.

My journey with Japanese began as a complete beginner, eventually leading me to study Japanese Language and Culture at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan. Living, studying, and working in Japan gave me first-hand experience of the language in both academic and everyday settings, helping me develop not only linguistic proficiency but also a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and communication.

Since then, I have worked professionally on literary translation and audiovisual subtitling projects involving Japanese and English. I also have experience teaching English and supporting students with their language learning, which has helped me develop a patient, organised, and encouraging teaching style.

Because I learned Japanese as a foreign language myself, I understand how challenging it can sometimes feel. My goal is to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and progressing at their own pace. Whether you are learning for travel, study, work, or simply out of curiosity, I will adapt each lesson to your individual goals and help you build confidence step by step.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to each student's goals, whether you are learning Japanese for travel, university, work, or personal interest. I believe that learning a language should be structured, practical, and enjoyable, while also giving students the confidence to communicate from the very beginning.

For beginners, I follow the structure of the *GENKI* textbook series, which I also used when I first started learning Japanese. Having begun with no previous knowledge of the language myself, I understand the challenges learners face and can explain grammar and vocabulary in a clear, approachable way. As students progress, I gradually introduce more authentic materials and draw on the university-level content I studied during my degree at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, adapting lessons to each learner's pace and interests.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged if required. Each lesson combines grammar, vocabulary, conversation practice, reading, and cultural insights, with regular revision to reinforce previous topics. I also provide personalised exercises and recommendations for independent study between lessons.

I studied Japanese Language and Culture at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and have since worked professionally in literary translation and audiovisual subtitling between Japanese and English. Alongside my translation experience, I have previous experience as an English teacher and teaching assistant, which has strengthened my ability to explain language concepts clearly and adapt my teaching to different learning styles.

My lessons are suitable for complete beginners through to intermediate learners, as well as students preparing for university, planning to travel to Japan, or simply wishing to build confidence in speaking and understanding Japanese.
