About David
My philosophy is that, whilst both approaches have their place, music is best and most fun when it is about expression and creation, as opposed to strictly 'learning the works of others'. I want to equip students with the tools to create and write music. I want my students to feel comfortable in new settings, improvising, jamming, whilst understanding the 'why' behind particular sounds - why does this sound good? Why does this work? What is the musical reasoning behind this choice? What sounds good to you sounds good to me because music is personal, and I do not dictate what type of music a student should enjoy or should try to learn. With younger students, preferences can change from one week to another, and it is my job to help them understand where their preferences are. If you learnt a new language, you would want to learn how to create new sentences on your own, how to write independently, and not how to simply recite paragraphs from books, and I approach the study of music in the same way

I am not a huge proponent of the 'sight-read-to-death' system that boxes students in and stifles creativity. I teach students to use their ear to learn, to understand sounds and to understand the piano, so that they can be equipped to handle all sorts of musical situations. I can be flexible with my lesson timings - the best method is the one that works best for you. However, I typically recommend 30-60 minutes. My lessons are targeted at beginners who want to understand how to play jazz/funk/soul piano, as well as improvisation, without following the 1-8 grade system.

Great teacher. Haven’t seen anyone be able to improvise as well across guitar and piano. Multiinstrumentalist and true musician with great theory knowledge and practical experience gigging.
