About Johnna
"Piano students often believe that playing the notes on the page is the only path to competence. In reality, the keys are just a springboard for your own musical intuition.
I hold a BM from Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and my training is voice-primary with piano as a second study. Having taught 160 students, I specialize in jazz improvisation, sight reading, and complex chord voicing. I push for precision in scales and arpeggios because technical facility allows for better expression. Sometimes I wonder if it is the piano or the singer inside the pianist that drives the music forward."

"Pacing begins with a heavy focus on dynamics and expression to keep the room engaged. Silence matters as much as the notes. We will work on memorization techniques and accompaniment skills to ensure you feel secure at the keyboard. My approach involves constant feedback, keeping the tempo of our interaction steady.
I stay at the piano to demonstrate how different voicings shift the emotional weight of a piece. We look at the music from a vocal perspective to help you phrase with more intention. By connecting your singing to your playing, you gain a deeper understanding of the score. The music starts to make sense when you hear it like a singer."
