I had the pleasure of having Phumeza as my Xhosa tutor in 2023. We got to know each other through my Xhosa lessons, and she was very patient, encouraging, and a dedicated tutor.
What stood out to me most was Phumeza ability to make learning Xhosa engaging and approachable. She was always willing to explain things clearly, adapt lessons to my level, and encourage me to keep practising, even when I found certain aspects challenging.
One experience I particularly appreciated was how Phumeza helped me become more confident in speaking and understanding Xhosa through practical conversations and everyday examples as some who was struggling with her home language. Her teaching went beyond simply learning vocabulary and grammar it helped me appreciate and connect with my home language.

Phumeza finished school a year before I finished and was hard working. Phumeza is a very patient and friendly, she lets you make mistakes and she encourages you to make mistakes so she can help you. She helped me with isiXhosa idioms and there was a lot I didn’t understand.

She took it upon herself to teach me isiXhosa, ensuring I learned the basics properly rather than settling for speaking broken Xhosa. She pays serious attention to detail and creates a comfortable learning environment where learners can make mistakes without fear. However, she ensures those mistakes are corrected, helping learners improve with every lesson. Phumeza is patient, encouraging and firm when necessary, especially when the same mistakes are repeated.
