About Emily

I have a genuine passion for Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, particularly its focus on questioning ideas and exploring important moral and religious issues.

I achieved a top grade in GCSE PER, regularly scoring almost full marks in practice papers, finishing top of my class and receiving the PER Award. I went on to study Religious Studies, Philosophy & Ethics at A-level alongside Politics and Economics at The Perse School, Cambridge, and now study Politics and International Affairs at King’s College London.

I understand that turning knowledge into marks can be challenging, as it did not come naturally to me at first. Through excellent guidance, I developed strong exam technique and learned how to structure arguments and evaluation effectively. I have also supported my younger sister with PER, helping her achieve a top grade.

I want to help students build confidence, understand the content and turn their ideas into high-mark answers.

About the lesson

GCSE Philosophy, Ethics & Religion Tutor | Content, Exam Technique & Essay Writing

I offer tutoring in GCSE Religious Studies, Philosophy, Ethics & Religion (PER), with a particular focus on helping students understand the subject while, most importantly, learning how to turn that knowledge into high-mark exam answers.

I achieved a top grade in GCSE PER, consistently achieving almost full marks in practice examinations and ranking at the top of my class in the subject. I was also awarded the PER Award at school in recognition of my achievement in the subject.

I went on to study Politics, Economics, and PER A-levels and achieving top grades at The Perse School in Cambridge, a highly academic independent school, before studying Politics and International Affairs at King’s College London.

What I particularly understand is that knowing the content is only part of succeeding in PER. Learning how to structure an answer, develop an argument, evaluate different perspectives and write according to the mark scheme is what ultimately turns knowledge into marks. I understand just how difficult this can be at first before you’re taught the technique, I benefited enormously from the guidance, resources and exam techniques taught by my teachers, and I now want to pass those strategies on to students.

My tutoring therefore focuses on:

Understanding difficult philosophical, ethical and religious ideas rather than simply memorising them
Learning exactly what examiners are looking for
How to structure high-level essay and evaluation questions
Developing clear, well-supported arguments
Using scholars, religious teachings and philosophical arguments effectively
Understanding how to evaluate rather than simply describe
Improving the structure and quality of written answers
Learning how to approach different question types and allocate time effectively
Identifying exactly where marks are gained and lost
Building confidence through practice questions and detailed feedback
Developing personalised revision and exam strategies

I know from my own experience that PER can initially feel difficult and that simply revising more does not necessarily translate into better grades. My aim is to make the process much clearer by showing students what a high-mark answer actually looks like, why it receives those marks, and how they can reproduce that approach themselves.

I want students to leave lessons not only knowing more about Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, but feeling confident that they know how to use that knowledge in the exam.

I am particularly happy to work with students who feel that they understand the content but struggle to turn it into the marks they want, as well as students who are starting from the basics and want to build a strong foundation. I'm happy to tailor content and style to the student, after helping my younger sister who learns very differently to me achieve a top grade at GCSE I'm confident I can assist students with all different needs and learning styles.
