About Ipsae

I’m Korean, born and raised in Seoul, and Korean is my native language.

As a language learner myself, I’ve learned that there’s a big difference between knowing an expression and being able to use it spontaneously in a real conversation.

I learned much of the English I use today through real conversations with English-speaking friends: hearing expressions in context, understanding how they’re actually used, and then trying them out myself.

That experience also shapes the way I approach Korean conversation practice.

During our lessons, I’ll give you time to find your words, try things out, make mistakes, and most importantly, finish what you want to say on your own.

Then we’ll go back over what you said together and make it sound more natural and better suited to the context.

My goal isn’t to have you speak perfect Korean from the start.

My goal is to help you turn the Korean you already know into Korean you can actually use in a real conversation.

If you already know a little Korean but haven’t had many opportunities to speak it, we can start right where you are today.

About the lesson

Do you already know a few Korean words, expressions, or sentences, but find that they don’t come as easily as you’d like when it’s your turn to speak?

That’s exactly what we’ll work on together.

Take your time. Say what you can. Then we’ll make your Korean sound more natural.

You don’t need to form a perfect sentence before you speak.

A single word, a short expression, or a simple sentence is enough to get started.

I won’t finish your sentences for you. I’ll give you time to find your own words and finish what you want to say.

If I understand what you mean, I won’t interrupt you to correct every little mistake.

The first goal is to give you space to speak and form your own sentences so you can get used to actually communicating in Korean.

Then we’ll go back over some of what you said and look at how to express it more naturally, depending on the situation and who you’re speaking to.

We can work on things such as:

* everyday conversation
* natural expressions commonly used in Korea
* pronunciation and intonation
* more natural ways to express your ideas
* different speech levels depending on the situation and who you’re speaking to
* using corrected expressions again in new conversations

So it’s not just about whether a sentence is grammatically correct. We’ll also ask:

“How would you naturally say this in Korean in this situation?”

Who are these lessons for?

These lessons are mainly for adults who can already read Hangul, even slowly, and know at least a few Korean words or expressions.

You may have studied Korean with an app, a textbook, videos, or classes, or simply picked it up through your interest in Korea.

You may already understand some Korean, but speaking still takes much more effort.

Even if you only know a few expressions so far, you can already start using them in real conversations.

You don’t need to be at an intermediate level or already know how to form long sentences.

If you already know a little Korean and want to start using it, we can start right where you are.

In the first lesson, we’ll spend a few minutes talking about your experience learning Korean, your goals, and the situations where you’d like to use Korean.

Then we’ll move into conversation fairly quickly so we can see what already feels comfortable, where you get stuck, and what we should focus on first.

If your main goal is TOPIK preparation or in-depth grammar instruction in English, these lessons probably won’t be the best fit for your needs.

Language of the lessons

Lessons are mainly in Korean, with simple English support when needed.

English is used as a bridge when necessary, rather than as the main language of instruction.

Above all, the goal is to give you a space where you can use as much Korean as possible, without pressure and at your own pace.
