About Kat

I made the decision to move from Toronto, Canada to England in 2012 as teaching jobs were scarce. I had completed a double major in English and History at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, an exchange programme at Leeds University and my teaching degree at Western University, but it was time to move on and start a new life if I wanted to fulfil my dream of being a teacher. I’ve been a KS4 leader for over 10 years, leading my department to Outstanding in 2023. While English and History are my passions, I have held many other roles such as a senior leadership secondment, Associate Senior Leader, year leader and Life Skills coordinator. My life isn’t all about work, though! I love spending time outdoors with my family, painting and learning Italian!

About the lesson

What is a “Get To Know You” session? Since every student has had a different academic experience, it is important that our first “get to know you” session identifies your unique academic needs. During this time, you may tell me your focus areas, or I can help by delivering a short diagnostic assessment. During this session, I will also ask a bit about you and your learning of English thus far. Don’t worry, it isn’t a test but simply a way of understanding who you are and what your experience of English has been thus far. What is a “Learning Journey?” From our initial discussion, an electronic, visual, learning journey will be created for you. This is updated after every session to track progress and to set achievable goals. Important dates like upcoming assessments can also be added. Both parents and students are welcome to make adaptations and access this document at any time. This ensures that parents, students and myself are all on the same page. What will a normal lesson look like? My lessons use a range of differentiated resources from a variety of sources. As a Key Stage 4 Leader for over 10 years, I have access to, and have created, many unique lessons which can be tailored to meet your individual needs. All work completed in lesson or outside of lessons will be marked and fed back by email or text. Can my parents join the lesson? Of course! Parents are welcome to join in on any lesson, anytime. Can you mark my AQA or OCR past papers? Of course! All papers that we look at in the lesson will be marked, however if you wish for me to mark additional papers that you do on your own time, there is a small fee. All papers will be marked and given written feedback. These can also be discussed in our lessons. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to starting our sessions!

If you wish to complete a past paper outside of a lesson and want it marked, there will be an additional cost of £5 per paper. If you choose to do this without an accompanying lesson, this can be arranged. I have many years of marking AQA literature and language papers and can thus give detailed feedback which is sent via email.
