About Shannon

I'm a professional designer based in Austin, holding a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami, where I graduated cum laude. Both degrees are studio-based, built on years of drawing, painting, color theory, composition, and formal critique, and I've since spent my career in design practice, where clear communication and consistent quality are the standard. I first taught as a teaching assistant for a five-week summer architecture program for high school students, and that experience is where I found out how much I enjoy helping someone see their own work more clearly. My approach is structured and practical. Each lesson opens with a warm-up, introduces one concept with a demonstration, and gives you most of the hour to work while I offer feedback in real-time, so you leave with something finished and a specific thing to practice. I work with beginners and intermediate students, teens through adults, in drawing fundamentals, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting, ink, color theory, and composition, along with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and I also prepare students for architecture and design school portfolio submissions. I take teaching seriously, I show up prepared, and I give honest feedback that tells you exactly what to do next.

About the lesson

I teach the way design studio taught me: you make something, we look at it together, and you revise it. There isn't much lecturing. Most of a lesson is you working while I check in, after a short warm up and a demonstration of the one concept we're covering that session, and you leave with a specific thing to practice. I break technique into small pieces, because most people who think they can't draw are missing one particular skill, usually observation or proportion, and my feedback is direct about what to try next rather than vague encouragement. My background is professional design, with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Landscape Architecture, so years of giving and receiving critique have made me good at explaining why something reads the way it does. I work with beginners and intermediate students, teens through adults, on drawing fundamentals, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting, ink, color theory, composition, and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, and I also can help students prepare portfolios for architecture and design programs, which most art tutors don't cover.
