About Brandon

In my opinion, the best teachers are more often, the once-struggling ordinary students, not the geniuses. For the geniuses simply learned the knowledge, whereas ordinary students struggled to know HOW TO LEARN the knowledge.

I am currently a 4.00 CGPA computer science/software engineering student and I teach English speaking, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, AddMaths, and Maths for SPM level in KL.

You can call me Brandon, I may be on this website as a "tutor" but I'll like it more if you treat me as a friend wanting to help you. (If you are reading this as a student of course, but if you're a parent... I guess I can still be a friend if you want to.)

The website is telling me to "Inspire confidence, establish your legitimacy and reassure students of your professionalism." so.. Bear with me, as I'll brag a little bit about myself.

I am that one kid in the class who everyone asks about the exam answer after we left the exam hall, for years. Or if there is an MCQ question paper, it gets borrowed by other students to "match with their own choices" to estimate their marks. That's how much confidence they have in me and my answers.

Back in matriculation, teachers hosted compulsory extra classes for students from time to time, but they specifically told me that I am exempted from it and I can have the free time to myself because they don't think that I need it. A few teachers instead told me that they'd like me to attend it as a helper/teaching assistant rather than a learner, if possible.

For my English on the other hand, here is a little story. I was a student of the COVID-19 era, one that had to endure years of online classes like many others. It was during those times that I was often mistaken as a foreigner, American specifically when I turn on my microphone and spoke in English. Both my matriculation English tutor, and university English tutor, felt weird as my English sounded very much like a local American, without any shred of Malaysian feel to it, it was as if they were talking to a Caucasian. If that sounds great to you, we can work on that together and I'll try my best to impart my English speaking skills, how I learned them, and how to practice them to you.

*Had experience working as a tuition teacher in a tuition center.
*Appointed as subject facilitators and teaching assistants in matriculation.
*Praised and often sought help from my peers/friends on explaining subject concepts.

In this course, you will learn how to: (in order of depth)
1. Cultivate the right mindset and motivation to learn English speaking.
2. Be aware of ways to train speaking that do NOT work, pitfalls, and common mistakes by many other students.
3. Realise the importance of nonverbal communication to support English verbal communication
4. Casual spoken English to befriend, socialize, and travel
5. Semi-Casual/Semi-Formal spoken English to give presentations, speeches, pitchings, and talk shows.
6. Formal spoken English to use in corporate/professional settings, business meetings, and job interviews.
7. The basics of persuasion using verbal English.
8. The basics to settle conflicts using verbal English.
9. And many more!

At some point in the class, I will reveal my killer techniques in self-learning English speaking without having attended any speaking classes or active talk courses at all!:
1. The passive and simple way to practice speaking even without a partner that you can easily do in your daily life!
2. An easy way to validate your own progress with good accuracy even without having a tutor or exam!
3. Types of English media to consume and how to consume them correctly to stay ahead of your peers!

I will be your training partner in this one-hour time too if you would like that to happen.

-You may or may hot have to attend the same class with other students at the same time.
-Classes only happen on SATURDAYS due to having university classes myself unless otherwise stated (semester breaks).
-I teach using a hybrid of methods based on my own experience and scientifically-proven study strategies.
-The entire lesson will be conducted in dominantly English and other languages will only be used in desperate situations for brief explanations, only by me.
-The length of a lesson will be a minimum of 1 hour, not exceeding 4 hours inclusive of in-lesson breaks. Different subjects for every separate hour are accepted.
~ English-speaking tutorials and practices for all levels. Correct grammatical errors, word mispronunciation, stuttering during speaking, confidence level, body language, and accents (if applicable).

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Actually, no. I was born into a Chinese family with Chinese being used as the default medium of communication in the household. I went to study in an SJKC, a Chinese Independent High School, and now TARC/TARUC/TARUMT, all Chinese education environments. You can say that my origins and surroundings are actually not the most optimal for learning English.

I speak this language fluently due to continuous exposure to English western media and the frequent consumption of said media over the course of half a decade. I have not attended any single speaking courses or "active talk" classes throughout my life, rather I discovered ways that helped me train the usage of the language by myself as I consumed all the relevant media.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    William Shakespeare.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I really like the word "Bruh". It's one of the few words that can convey every single possible emotion a human can experience just solely by the difference in tone, body language, and facial expressions you use when speaking the word in a casual daily setting.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Let's be honest here. It opens doors and windows, tons of them, either in just broadening your horizons, aiding your education, or furthering your career, it helps a lot depending on what you plan to do with it. But the best (fun) part about understanding English like it's second nature is the ability to understand memes and get punchlines of English jokes almost instantaneously, those hilarious moments are priceless and I can no longer imagine my life without that ability.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The lack of chances to practice the usage of the language in daily life. A willing speaking partner doesn't only help, but is extremely crucial to the process of learning for most people. Most people will almost certainly fail at learning how to speak this language fluently if they have nobody to speak it with.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was 12 years old in my class, during my UPSR year, our English teacher of that class handed back our test papers, and I was the only student that got an A, a borderline 80%, while some students just barely scraped the passing mark of 40% including those students who got consistent As in previous years, a good fraction of the class failed the paper.

The whole class applauded me, clapping hands, and said wow when they heard my score, but not the teacher. He said something along the lines of "Why are you all cheering? You think this score is good? It is not, it is actually really bad, and you should reflect on the mistakes you made in the paper". I did not feel happy nor disheartened, although I have to admit that 80 was the lowest mark I got so far at that point in my life, I was determined to know how to get back my previous marks from this teacher.

As it turns out, all the previous teachers were lenient with the marking, while this teacher was reasonably strict, and asked for accurate and correct grammar, sentence structures, and appropriate use of words/phrases that seem almost comparable to MUET level as seen by other students, he was not asking for primary school English, he was simply asking for.. English. He did not simplify the language just because it is primary school syllabus and insisted on teaching "English" as a language rather than as a subject, and as a result, I mastered even the most confusing parts of grammar from this teacher during this standard 6 year and kept it with me through SPM, MUET until now.

Never be satisfied with your current level so that you can continue to improve, be open to criticisms and even the harshest of words can become constructive feedback. Turn your weaknesses into your biggest strengths.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I can't answer this question sadly, as I had not traveled anywhere that is relevant to the improvement of this language.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

Other tutors can fix your grammar, broaden your vocabulary, and improve your writing, listening, or reading, helping you improve it as an academic subject. But I can help you integrate the language into your life, make it something beyond a mere academic subject, something that makes up who you are, a part of your identity and life. I can help you be one with the language, and be able to converse with the language in a way comparable to those of a native American.

I can make it your second, first language.
