I first met Jenica 19 years ago when I was a brand new nursing graduate working in a cardiac ICU. Jenica was my preceptor, and I truly could not have asked for a better person to guide me through one of the most challenging and stressful environments in nursing.

Jenica didn’t just teach me how to get through a shift, she taught me the why behind what I was doing. She taught me why medications work, why a patient’s vital signs might be rising or falling, why something wasn’t working, and how to recognize what those changes meant. She had an incredible ability to take complicated information and explain it in a way that was clear, understandable, and never overwhelming.

Just as importantly, Jenica taught me how to care for patients. She constantly reminded me that the person in front of me was someone’s mother, father, spouse, child, or loved one. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my nursing career.

19 years later, Jenica has remained one of my most cherished friends, even though our careers and lives eventually took us in different directions. That says a lot about the kind of person she is, both as a nurse and as a teacher.
