About Zubin

‘For every Move 37 there will be a Move 78 and in football there will be more than one Move 78’
If I had to sum up what football means to me in one sentence, then I would use the above one. Move 37
was a move made by AlphaGo – the artificial intelligence system created by DeepMind. The move that
this AI made was so phenomenal that it had human chance of 1 in 10,000 – basically very less chance of
a human ever making a move like that. Then came the move known as ‘God’s Touch’ (yes ‘Hand of God’
was already taken) by world’s best Go player Lee Sodol; the human representative and the one against
whom AlphaGo was playing. After DeepMind analyzed the match, they came to a conclusion that the
chances of Move 78 were 1 in 10,000 too.
What does this have to do with Football and Coaching? Glad you ask.
How many times have we seen players do things on a football pitch that no one ever dreamed of?
How many times have football players shown that they were not just players but human beings capable
of teaching us much more than competitiveness and passion?
How many times have we made the comparisons of a player’s movement as God-like?
How many times have we thought it’s all over and then it isn’t?
How many times have we seen that the work that coaches and managers do goes beyond tactics and
techniques?
If you answered ‘many’ to more than 3 of the above questions then I am glad you are reading this.
Born in 80’s and growing up in 90’s I never had a football coach who would know even 1/100th of the
game knowledge and understanding of human behavior that is taught today at grassroot level coaching
license. I don’t blame them because coaching was not a lucrative field and if anything the stigma around
being a ‘coach’ has only grown.
I can write and share all the technical jargon that I know, for the sake of brevity I will only say that a
small part of my life’s purpose is my war against that stigma and to change the outlook that society has
formed. Because, ‘Every coach is an educator but not every educator is a coach.’
Finally to sum this up, my understanding of the game that I endeavor to instill in the players and
wonderful human beings I work with comes down to these 3 sentences:
A good defender reads actions, a great defender reads intentions.
A good midfielder creates space, a great midfielder creates time.
A good attacker makes good decisions, great attackers make the defender make the decisions for them.

About the lesson

My coaching methodology is based on research and being able to stay ahead of the competition by having a network of professors from various fields. The sessions are not based on self-help books but on actual concepts of how human behavior has evolved and the basic understanding of psychology combined with ecological dynamics and decision making.
