About John

My career in photography has spanned more than 25 years, combining work as a photographer, educator, writer, and industry leader. I studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York after receiving scholarship support while attending a visual and performing arts high school, and I’ve spent my career exploring both the artistic and technical sides of the medium.

I’ve photographed in a wide variety of settings, from portraits and weddings to architecture, editorial, commercial, and studio work. Along the way, I’ve taught photography throughout the United States and internationally, interviewed and collaborated with many of the industry’s leading photographers, and helped educate photographers at every stage of their creative journey.

My work has appeared in publications including American Theatre Magazine, PDN (Photo District News), KelbyOne, MMW, and AFN, and was featured in Jill Enfield’s book on tintypes. Beyond creating photographs, I’ve worked with some of the photography industry’s most respected companies, including B&H Photo and Profoto, while also supporting boutique manufacturers and emerging brands that continue to shape the craft.

Photography has given me the opportunity to build relationships across every corner of the industry, but what continues to inspire me most is helping others discover the excitement of making meaningful images. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to deepen your skills, I bring decades of professional experience and a genuine passion for teaching to every lesson.

About the lesson

Photography isn’t just about mastering a camera. It’s about discovering how you see the world and learning to express that perspective through images. Every photographer develops a unique visual voice, and my goal is to help you find yours while building the technical skills needed to bring your ideas to life.

Depending on your interests and goals, we can explore studio, portrait, wedding, architecture, and outdoor photography, as well as lighting, composition, visual storytelling, mixed photographic techniques, and the history of photography. I also provide portfolio reviews and constructive critiques for students preparing for school, exhibitions, professional opportunities, or simply looking to strengthen their work. Students should have their own camera or smartphone available during lessons.

Whether photography becomes a lifelong passion, a creative outlet, or a professional pursuit, I want you to leave each lesson seeing the world a little differently and with the confidence to create images that reflect your own perspective.
