About Nancy

A seasoned educator, I’m creative, energetic, and engaging. I’m a reader and a writer and love teaching both. I’ve worked as a classroom teacher, professor, learning specialist, and tutor with students Pre-K-adults with a range of strengths and challenges including giftedness, those on the spectrum, as well as students with dyslexia and ADHD. I tailor lessons to meet the individual needs of each student, aiming to instill students with an interest in and curiosity about the many forms and uses of the written word.

About the lesson

I know students have learned a concept when they can identify it in a different context different from the one in which it was taught. For example: (1) sixth grader Tina, burst into class, “Nancy, I went to IHOP this weekend. Did you know there are two vowels in IHOP!? The "i" is long, the "o" is short.” (2) After a four-week summer class for fourth and fifth graders in figurative language, I asked everyone to use a figure of speech illustrating what they thought of the class. Fifth grader, Mim: “ You hit the nail on the head, it was just right.” (3) While watching a movie in a theater with his mom, my six-year-old student “Mom, does EXIT spell “exit”? In the words of a ninth grade student, “ At her year-end presentation to classmates and families, ninth grade Liz said "…after all of this hard work and hard spelling, I finally like to READ!!!!! A typical 45-60 minute lesson (specifics vary according to age/grade of student) 1. Introduction (Clap hello, name (syllabication) or write in log. (What was something you found interesting this week?) 2. Direct Instruction: Decoding, Handwriting, essay writing, grammar, spelling, comprehension 3. Book Reading (related skills from #2) 4. Closure: Game reinforcing skills

Writing a recommendation for Nancy Klein as a teacher/tutor makes me smile. Why? Because I am 100% certain that Nancy is a great and creative teacher, who really cares about each student.
I have known Nancy for twenty years, first as her minister and after my retirement, as a friend. We keep in touch regularly. I know that Nancy's true calling is working with kids. Teaching/tutoring energizes her and she becomes a detective, searching for the optimal approach to spark interest in each kid. I'd say they are lucky to have Nancy Klein on their "Learning Team."
