About Arndt

I have experience both as a university lecturer and as a high school teacher. I have also been employed for some time as a study coach with a Swedish learning academy helping students to improve their marks. Presently, I hold an academic role at the University of Lund in Sweden. I have worked as a full-time high-school teacher at a Swedish school in Lund. Although Swedish is not my native tongue, my Swedish is pretty close to native level after having spent 8 years in the country. I speak English and German (native) as well as Swedish and Spanish (fluent) and French, Danish and Norwegian at an intermediate level. I hold a PhD in physics, but please don´t hold that against me. Iḿ otherwise quite normal.

I have been teaching languages part time for over 2 decades. My teaching has always been student focused. It is my declared goal, that rather sooner than later, you can complete your learning journey without my help so I can help others.

I have lived on 3 continents and three times in my live I arrived in a country where I did not speak (or poorly spoke) the local language. So I know what it is like to be an immigrant who is desperately trying to understand the locals. Even the simplest tasks can become a challenge. But fear not, if I and many others could do it, so can you. I can give you a good head start, though.

About the lesson

Making your learning experience a total success is my mantra. This implies that your learning path is to be an enjoyable one and an effective one. With about 2 decades of experience in part-time language teaching and 5 years as a university lecturer, you can count on me being knowledgeable, well organized, effective, but also fun to work with.

The main course material is based on integration courses designed for immigrants, which provide a good, well-tested and well-structured basis for learning the Swedish language, and which at the same time conveys a lot of information on Swedish culture and life in Sweden. It also prepares you well for the official standardized European language certificates should you choose to obtain these.

Apart from the main language course material I encourage you to immerse in the Swedish language, to expose yourself to as much Swedish as possible, by reading original literature from very early on, listening to Swedish music, audio books, podcasts, movies, etc. I encourage you to think Swedish rather than to translate every word in your head, that is to say, get an insight into how the language works rather than trying to squeeze it into pre-conceived concepts of your native language that are often not a good fit. This leads to fluent, natural speaking as you progress.

With a commitment of 2 hours of online classes a week, anyone can easily master the level A2 in about 7 months with me. That represents functional Swedish that allows you to master any everyday situation, though many achieve near fluent speaking levels during that time. There is no repetitive learning of vocabulary involved, no formal homework, however, I do strongly encourage you to expose yourself to at least 2x15min minutes of Swedish daily by listening to music, the radio, movies, audio books, podcasts, reading a Swedish book for leisure etc. There are 2 Google drives filled with over 200 books in Swedish for you, many audio books and a few movies to choose from. And there is a guide on how to find more on the internet or at Swedish libraries.

My methods work well for all ages and for people from all walks of life. However, looking at my students from recent years, about a third of them are 60+, another third are full-time working mums and dads with very little time on their hands. What's more, about a third (several of them overlapping with the latter group) say that they can learn Swedish words and read okay, but that they don´t dare to speak or frankly admit that they suffer from some sort of learning disability. Fear not. ALL of them are mastering the Swedish language at just about the same pace as a typical 25 year old student. And none of them fear to speak after 3 months or less. I have analyzed in depth how learning changes with age and how mental blocks can get in our way of learning and I have developed very effective methods that I tailor to each student individually to obtain the best possible outcome for him or her just so you can overcome these roadblocks.
