TEACHING TAGALOG LANGUAGE: BASIC TO ADVANCED LEARNING
As a native Tagalog speaker, NCCA facilitator, and stage director/actor with over 20 years of experience, I bring a dynamic, immersive, and culturally rooted approach to teaching Tagalog- combining conversational practice, cultural immersion, and performance-based techniques to make learning natural, engaging, and effective.
MY TEACHING METHOD AND TECHNIQUES
I use a communicative and immersive approach, prioritizing real-life conversation from day one. Students learn Tagalog in context - through dialogues, storytelling, role-playing, and cultural scenarios - not isolated words. As a stage director and actor, I incorporate performance techniques like voice modulation, improvisation, and expressive delivery to build confidence and fluency. I may also integrate Filipino-rich cultural materials - folk tales, traditional songs, and local expressions - so students don't just learn the language but understand the heart of Filipino culture.
A TYPICAL LESSON PLAN
Each session follows a structured yet flexible flow:
1. Warm-up (5–10 mins): Conversational practice using previously learned phrases.
2. Vocabulary and Grammar Focus (15 mins): New words and sentence structures introduced through real-life examples.
3. Guided Practice (15 mins): Role-playing, dialogue exercises, and situational conversations.
4. Cultural Insight (5–10 mins): A brief discussion of Filipino customs, idioms, or expressions related to the lesson.
5. Wrap-up and Assignment (5 mins): Recap, Q&A, and practical take-home exercises.
