About Simon
I have studied art from some of America's greatest representational artists such as David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw, Koo Schadler, and Douglas Flynt. From these artists, I mainly learned to paint still life in a studio with paint; however, I developed also a philosophical approach to composition which is most similar to the old Dutch artists such as Rembrandt. From this tuition, I created many still life paintings in oil. Several years later, I experimented with using India ink on paper and walnut ink on paper to go into the landscape and sketch. I am therefore completely self-taught with ink. My lessons are for those who sense that there is far more to sketching than just observation and recording what you observe. Because there can be if you develop a philosophy about composition that will not only help you create breathtaking masterpieces but the philosophy itself will give you the curiosity and enthusiasm to explore the world as I have, endlessly and passionately, and what could be better than that!

While drawing may seem simplistic to some, it is not to me as I have a very in-depth philosophical approach. A typical lesson plan will be catered to your goals; for example, if you simply want to develop drawing skills, I can give you feedback on your sketches of singular objects. If, however, you wish to create a well-composed picture, I can talk with you about good composition and give you feedback on any sketch you present. Composition for me is actually a massive topic and vital to a great drawing. This understanding can then be utilized if you want to go further and paint. My deep understanding of composition is my strength. I drew for two years before I painted so that I did not become 'lost in the world of color" and that is how I can create a great sketch by only using one color. I firmly believe it's intelligent composition that creates great art, and because so few art tutors teach it, I have mainly created my own in-depth philosophy about it. You can get a glimpse into this by watching some of my videos on Instagram where I talk about how I compose a scene. This is for anyone at any level wanting to improve their understanding of composition of sketching abilities, particularly outside in the landscape or for still life. I also have a specialty in using India ink and walnut ink on paper.
