About James
I am currently writing the music for a short film, and film composing is something I am hugely passionate about. But, I loved composition from the first time I tried it as a boy.
It was my main focus at university and I achieved a 1st in both my final compositions.
The only downside was that, at the time, the university pushed us towards a particular kind of composing.
That isn't how I'll teach.
You bring the style, I'll bring the tools and techniques. And, most importantly, we'll work on throwing any sort of perfectionism out the window. Fear kills creativity. I learnt that the hard way, and I will endeavour to strip any fear away from the music you're listening to, learning about and especially writing yourself.
Just to write a piece of music, however simple, is something to be celebrated and cherished. We'll be doing a lot of that together.
So, let's get cracking!

Composing isn't easy - even the most experienced musicians struggle. So, we'll take it step by step, with a target defined by you and a route mapped out by me.
Composition requires theory, playing, listening and creativity.
All of which can be learnt, and your 30 or 60 minute lessons will be a combination of these four quarters.
If you're a beginner when it comes to theory, then I would recommend combining your composition lessons with the theory lessons I offer. Similarly, if you don't play piano, consider combining composition with piano.
Most importantly, bring your passion, your creativity and any prior knowledge you have with you, and you'll be writing music of your own in no time.
