About Barry

Hi, I am Barry Fenton, a fourth-year Law with History student at UCD. I am a very patient and friendly tutor based in Dun Laoghaire. I sat my Leaving Cert in 2022 achieving 577 points and 98% in History. I love teaching and have a fresh and up-to-date approach to the current course and its recent changes. I understand the student perspective well and use my own studying experiences to inform my teaching. On the first day of secondary school our teacher began by writing "history" up on the wall. He circled the first two letters and said: "Hi...tell me a story". I believe there is something in history for everyone and it is a matter of understanding how we look at the past to inform on our present.

About the lesson

I am very organized and try to instill this in my students too. I plan all my lessons in advance and ensure my students are aware of what topics we are approaching. The core skills for doing well in history are research and analysis. The Leaving Cert is a means of testing these skills through the exam and RSR. I support the student by exploring each topic in a way that is personally engaging for them. For the RSR, I provide H1 materials, samples and feedback from my own project as well as draw on my extensive research experience from my university studies. For the exam, I provide H1 notes and essays as well as an experienced understanding of how to do well on the source analysis. I have very well-informed study methods which can be molded to each student depending on their preferred learning style, for example; visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. I give essays each week to make sure the skills we develop are maintained. I also organize tests to be done in exam conditions at home. During the week I am contactable by text or email and am able to send notes and tips on the homework or past papers I give to ensure an efficient pace is maintained. I am very patient and have time for any and all questions including ones between grinds by text or email.
