About Kristýna
I am a Czech flautist and singer with Slovak and Syrian roots, now based in Sheffield. My artistic voice is shaped by both the European classical tradition and Middle Eastern musical heritage. As an independent performer, I focus on 20th-century and contemporary Czech repertoire, improvisation, and Arabic classical and folk traditions. I’m also passionate about exploring the intersections between music, literature, and visual art, and my projects often reflect that interdisciplinary curiosity.
As a soloist and chamber musician, I’ve appeared at major Czech festivals, including Prague Sounds, where I performed Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint for flutes and tape, alongside one of the soprano parts in his Music for 18 Musicians. In 2015, I was a soloist on alto flute in a unique performance and recording of Zdeněk Liška’s score for Marketa Lazarová—one of the gems of Czech New Wave cinema—with the Baborák Ensemble. This project was later reprised in 2022 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the renowned French horn player Radek Baborák.
Drawing on my Syrian heritage, I co-founded the Albaidar Duo with oud player and poet Marwan Alsolaiman. Our music focuses on intimate arrangements of Arabic classical and folk repertoire. I also explore free improvisation in Fahrzavö, a Prague-based quartet with woodwinds and cimbalom. I’m interested in music’s dialogue with visual art and literature; for example, I created a live musical response for the exhibition The Weight of Words at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds. I’ve also performed selections from Charles Koechlin’s Les Chants de Nectaire for solo flute accompanied by readings from Anatole France’s La Révolte des Anges, which inspired the composer.
In chamber settings, I’ve collaborated with London-based flautist Martina Mihulková and British harpist and composer Ruth Lee on various recital programmes. I have collaborated with Czech composers including Jan Rybář—premiering his score for a Czech silent film at the Prague Spring Festival. My orchestral experience includes work with PKF–Prague Philharmonia, Berg Orchestra, and the Prague Chamber Orchestra. I also love choral music and currently perform with the Leeds Guild of Singers, led by Benjamin Kirk.
