About Jonathan

My name is Jonathan Saraga and I'm a GRAMMY-winning trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, arranger, educator and Doctor of Musical Arts based out of New York City.

I have been working as a performing/recording artist for 2 decades as well as private teacher, ensemble coach, clinician and lecturer within public school, private school, charter school and university environments for the past 15 years. I appear on over 40 studio recordings, in over 250 YouTube videos, and have engaged with audiences in over 500 cities, nearly 70 countries and just short of 100 different universities world-wide.

Over the course of 25 years of musical training, I've earned 3 Trumpet Performance/Jazz Studies degrees, and have been recognized 35 times in the form competitive selections from 25 national and international organizations, and have performed throughout Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, Asia and the U.S. via multiple national tours, and have been employed by dozens of GRAMMY-nominated and/or winning artists.

Since 2010, I have been teaching all-level/all-age music playing and appreciation courses for a host of New York City-based organizations, including the Afro-Latin Jazz Academy, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York, New York Ensemble Classes, the Lyceum Kennedy International School, Jubilee Enrichment Programs, Jazz Empowers and the New York Jazz Academy. I also served as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I taught multiple ensembles as well as three semesters of a 100+ student History of Jazz History lecture class. I've even been a part of international educational outreach engagements in places like Costa Rica, Australia and Canada.

My private studio has been active since 2011 and has garnered 5-Star ratings on Yelp (47 Reviews) and Google (21 Reviews), as well as 2 “People Love us on Yelp" awards, a (concealed information) "Top Pro" award, a “Best of (concealed information)” award and a "We're Highly Recommended by Locals on Alignable" award.

About the lesson

Are you looking to get started with trumpet lessons for yourself or a loved one? Not making the progress you want? Don't really know how to make progress? Study with an internationally acclaimed trumpeter, composer and Doctor of Musical Arts with 30+ musical awards, 3 degrees in jazz studies/trumpet performance as well as over two decades of experience performing, recording and competing globally. Over the past 10 years, I've helped nearly 100 individuals of all ages and skill levels realize their trumpet playing and musical potential, and I guarantee I will do the same for you.

My ultimate goal as an educator is to guide you toward the realization of your potential. Our learning environment will nurture a personalized process of self-discovery through my guidance, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all system of dictation for how you should or should not develop and/or perceive material. I see each interaction with a student as a sacred opportunity to help facilitate realization, regardless of magnitude, and I have dedicated myself to refining my abilities as a musician and teacher, to that end. I am confident that through our lessons, I will not only help you become better at hearing, internalizing, and expressing music, but that I will guide you in developing your own personal musical voice and direction.

Potential topics we can cover are: Tone/Sound Conception, Sight-Reading Ability, Musical Instinct, Development of Proper Technique, Music Notation Skills, Fingerings/Scale Recall, Range Building, Air Control/Manipulation, Pitch Awareness, Accuracy, Music Theory Knowledge, and much MUCH more. I'm able to teach anyone of any age, from beginner to expert levels. I also have experience teaching special needs individuals.
