While her work to preserve Greek mathematics and astronomy ultimately led to her brutal death at 45, Hypatia’s intellectual accomplishments solidified her status as a pioneer in mathematics and gender equality. 

You may have heard of Pascal’s theorem, but the mathematician who worked on this ubiquitous triangle also advanced other areas of mathematics, such as conic sections, projective geometry and probability. Did you know Blaise Pascal’s own father did not let him learn geometry for fear it would deter his son from other studies? That did not stop Pascal from taking up an interest in math and at just the age of 12, he discovered that the sum of the interior angles of all triangles was 180°! 

When he was just a teenager, Srivinasa Ramanujan was inspired to explore mathematics after studying G. S. Carr’s A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics. His lifetime’s work involved research into elliptic functions, continued functions, infinite series and the partition function. Despite his lack of a university education, Ramanujan gained recognition for his research paper on Bernoulli numbers in 1911 and became well-known as a mathematical genius.
