Would you be brave enough to conduct performances in front of audiences, at a time when the world was at war? This was exactly what Dame Myra Hess, a widely celebrated English pianist, had in mind. During WWII, music venues in London had to be closed in order to prevent mass casualties in the event of bombing. At this point, Hess had the revolutionary idea of hosting classical music concerts at the National Gallery. Known as her lunchtime concerts, around 750,000 people attended her concerts for over six and a half years!
Hess’ story of bringing classical music to all demonstrates the power of determination and perseverance that all piano players can learn from, should they also dream of becoming great musicians one day.
Feeling like you are getting nowhere with your piano practice? Well, you are not alone. Many piano players, even seasoned ones, can feel stuck in their practice when they have not set specific goals or have simply been repeating the same skills over and over again. Fortunately, there are just as many ways to remain challenged in your piano playing so that you stay motivated.
Knowledge of the five-finger scales, or the major and minor five-finger patterns, is one of the basic piano skills that all beginners start with. As students progress in their learning, the five-finger scales may be overlooked by one-octave scales or multiple-octave scales, often assumed to be more important in advancing one’s level of piano playing. However, it’s extremely handy to memorise all the five-finger scales if you want to improve your hand positioning and play the piano more naturally.
Imagine that your fingers can automatically go to the appropriate notes when reading sheet music, such as if you have to play a song in the key of E major. So, keep the five-finger scales in mind when you practise and pay close attention to the tones being played.
You may be tempted to play all your favourite pop and rock songs on the piano, but remember to also include classical music during your practice. The classical piano is recommended to train your basics well while helping you increase your technical abilities. Later on, you can progress into more challenging piano pieces and improve your confidence in your piano playing.
Additionally, finding an experienced mentor ensures you never get stuck at the piano, since you will always have something new to learn.
