The History of The Piano

To produce the sounds they desired, musicians either plucked the strings of the dulcimer or used small hammers to beat its strings. 

Musicians also desired other varied sounds, such as being able to control the loudness and softness of the stringed instrument being played. So in the early 1700s, Bartolomeo Cristofori, who was a harpsichord maker, set out to create such an instrument and eventually invented what is now recognised as the world’s first piano. 

At the time of its exhibition in 1709, this new, astounding instrument was called gravicembalo col piano e forte, or the “soft and loud harpsichord”. It was then shortened to fortepiano, also called pianoforte, before being called “piano” as we know it in the present day. 

Besides the fact that Cristofori’s pianos were played by striking the keys with felt-covered hammers, the standard modern piano bears a great resemblance to its predecessor. You can find seven full octaves on the modern piano, which often has a total of 88 keys.
