About Ethel Mary Joy

Hi, I’m an English conversation tutor with two years of experience teaching students of all ages, from kids and teenagers to adults. I teach with the Callan Method, a fast, structured question-and-answer approach that gets you speaking in full sentences and thinking in English from the very first lesson.

I adapt every class to your level and goals, from beginner to advanced, and give you clear feedback and short revision tasks so you keep improving between lessons. I have plenty of experience helping students with the sounds and habits that need extra practice. My classes are friendly and low-pressure, so you can feel comfortable making mistakes.

About the lesson

I teach English using the Callan Method, a structured question-and-answer system built for fast progress in speaking and listening. Each lesson runs entirely in English at a natural, slightly quick pace, so you learn to think and respond without translating in your head. You answer every question in a complete sentence, I repeat key structures until they become automatic, and I correct mistakes on the spot so you can repeat the right version immediately. A typical lesson starts with a 10-minute revision of the previous class, moves into about 30 minutes of new vocabulary and grammar through Callan-style questions, then spends 10 minutes reinforcing the trickiest points and drilling pronunciation, and ends with 5 minutes of feedback and a short revision task. What sets me apart is that you do most of the talking, and I track each learner’s recurring mistakes, such as dropped short words or tricky sounds like “th” and “r”, and work on them every lesson, all in a supportive, low-pressure atmosphere. My lessons suit beginner to advanced learners, from teenagers to adults, especially Portuguese speakers who understand English but struggle to speak spontaneously and who prefer a clear, step-by-step structure over loose conversation practice.
