About Shalome
I am a Linguistics and History graduate with a Diploma of Modern Languages in Arabic. I have additional qualifications in editing and publishing, as well as creative writing. Language and languages have fascinated me since I was a small child. My father read us everything from The Odyssey and The Iliad, to the Song of Hiawatha and the Narnia chronicles. I started writing poetry and short fiction before I was 10. During my university years I worked for booksellers and after graduating I worked in the publishing industry for 10 or so years. I have various awards for my writing including the David Johanson prize for best third year essay from LaTrobe University. Throughout my degree I tutored primary and secondary students in English and Biology, as well as tutoring visiting academics in ESL. I also tutored spoken English to employees of the UNRWA in Damascus. I specialize in assisting people to work through learning blocks, and finding the joy and creativity in learning so that what might have seemed difficult or challenging becomes something enjoyable and life-giving.

I have tutored students at all levels of learning, both in Australia and overseas. My approach is creative, energetic, engaged and collaborative. I use different techniques based on the learning style of my student and the goals to be reached. Initial lesson 45 mins: determine student needs, current skill level / desired skill level, and create a plan to bridge the gap. Subsequent lessons: 20-40 mins as required. Implement acceleration plan as above. Online learning (unless students are located in Ballarat area) supported by out-of-session practice and research.
