About Abigail
Hello,
My name is Abigail Van Raalte! Despite my Dutch last name, I am a Canadian through-and-through! I have lived in Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia! Currently, I am working on my BA in Linguistics in Toronto. It is my dream to conduct linguistic research and teach in a University setting.

Teaching literacy skills is a passion of mine! I teach those who do not have a foundation in reading or writing as well as students learning literacy skills in a second language.
With children, I first discover their current level of comprehension and then start to build phonological awareness as a foundation for reading success.
With adults, I approach literacy learning as a collaboration in which we work together to build skills for a relevant purpose, such as reading work emails. We will focus on building appropriate vocabulary skills and reading in context.
With both adults and children, I use a balanced approach that teaches both phonics and contextual reading strategies.
I can support existing course materials or design standalone, customized lessons to meet individual learning goals.
With a foundation in linguistics, I have a strong understanding of how languages work and learning them takes place. Through my tutoring experience, I’ve observed that learning happens most effectively when the content is relevant, engaging, and connected to learners’ real needs.
