About Victoria

I have been working with students since I was a teenager, living in Japan (1978) supporting a Japanese teen with her English studies. This led to supporting EFL students through the library system in the Midwest and then London, where I pursued a teaching degree (PGCE) at Greenwich University, London and worked with Adult Literacy and EFL students in a community college setting. I continue to support and enjoy empowering others to engage more confidently in whichever area they feel support is needed through my local library literacy program. EXAMPLES: EXAM PREP: passing the highway code driving test, psychology exam prep ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE SUPPORT: Reading, pronunciation, comprehension and expression ADDITIONAL: Students with dyslexia and mild autism

About the lesson

It is important for me to understand the needs, interests, goals and learning styles and challenges of the student in order to tailor lessons to empower, build confidence and provide strategies that they can apply independently.

Examples:
Dyslexic student needed to pass the Highway Code driving test strategy: Questions and only the correct answer were recorded, which the student repeatedly listened to until ready to undertake the exam verbally. A perfect score was achieved as the student only recognized the correct answer.

Second language student with performance anxiety needed exam prep support to pass the psychology exam. Comprehension, interpretation and reasoning process exercises were applied. Validating the student's abilities is very important in helping to gain confidence and reducing performance anxiety.

EFL - English and a Foreign Language: Supporting students with grammar, comprehension, pronunciation, expression and conversational practice. Asking the student how they are able to recall (e.g. through association, etc. - make a game / humor) helps.

Adult Literacy - Basic reading, writing and spelling

Asking the student to teach me something they feel confident about is a great way to build confidence and rapport.

Victoria has been teaching me English for over a year. I feel so lucky to have found such an amazing tutor! I have had six English tutors in the past, but Victoria is by far my favorite teacher. Her teaching style is both professional and personal. She will listen to your individual needs, and adjust to your level. For me, aside from the excellent teaching skill, it’s very important to be able to feel comfortable spending time with the tutor, with whom I spend a lot of time with! If I feel nervous or intimidated, I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking questions. Victoria, with her kind, warm presence, creates an ideal learning environment where I can focus on absorbing knowledges.

She is a brilliant, patient, and fun teacher - I grew to LOVE Victoria over time, and I even see her as my mentor ;)
