About Fintan

I'm Fintan, I'm from South London. I am a positive, encouraging and compassionate English and Drama tutor with a professional background in theatre and education.

I have over three years worth of experience as a teaching assistant in Primary, Secondary and SEN education. I often work with students who struggle academically, have learning difficulties, behavioural needs and SEN from KS2 - GCSE level. I have a keen sense of the patience, flexibility and consistency needed in order to help my learners progress.

I have been volunteering as a tutor/literacy support worker for the Hackney Pirates for nearly two years. I love being part of this organisation because you see how it empowers young learners to explore their own creativity, develop their writing skills and grow in confidence.

My work as a professional playwright has often incorporated children and young people. I have run after school drama and script writing clubs with primary aged children. I have also worked with children and young people on commissioned projects to help discover their voice and realise their potential through drama.

Writing, editing and reviewing scripts all the time has fostered an analytical and critical rigour to my teaching practice, which is helpful when studying plays, novels and poems for English Literature.

About the lesson

I tailor my lessons to the academic aims and needs of the student at hand. I try to encourage an area of interest in the subject which helps unlock a sense of natural investigation into their learning. That comes first and then the exam requirements come next. I am under the belief that if students connect with their learning first they are much more likely to remember it, since they can think through their arguments independently. Then it is all about presenting the argument correctly.
