About Tom

I have been a teacher for 20 years after completing a teaching diploma when I graduated from Manchester University in 1998 with an Honours degree in Theology and Philosophy. During my degree I took a psychology module every year and my interest in this subject led me to later study Counselling and Psychotherapy Psychology at Regent's University. When I first started teaching I taught mainly Religious Education and Philosophy from Key Stage 3 to A-level. For the last ten years I have taught Psychology at A-level (AQA A syllabus) and English at KS3+4. I have taught at five different schools across London, from all-boys, to all-girls, to mixed. Class sizes have ranged from 3 to 33. I have done a lot of work with students who struggle academically and helped them achieve beyond what they thought they were capable of. At my last school, I pioneered an A-level Psychology course from scratch and successfully helped students achieve a 100% pass rate.

As a teacher I think it is important that I instil enthusiasm and interest in the subject I am teaching. Without a vested 'interest' students find it harder to engage. Philosophy, theology and psychology are fascinating subjects that are directly significant to our lives. However, they are hard subjects that require a dedication to learning very specific facts and concepts. While I encourage students to enjoy the interesting aspects of these subjects, I leave them with no illusion as to how hard they can be. Depending on the student's or group's needs, lessons can either be unstructured or structured. Where they are unstructured, lessons will be like a 'learning discussion', where students pose questions related to the topic area they need to learn, I will teach, but give space for further questions, queries, clarifications and discussion. When structured, lessons will be in three parts. An introduction, where I'll introduce the topic, the ‘Learning Aim’ of the lesson and pose a question to get students thinking, or I will ask students to complete a small task which has relevance to the learning of the lesson. After some discussion and answering any questions that might arise at this point, I will get into the 'meat' of the topic. I will teach the students the key learning points that will lead to understanding the topic, and the required knowledge to pass the exam. The third part of my lesson will be task-based to consolidate the teaching, along with feedback with a plenary at the end to check what has been learned. I can set weekly homeworks which either consolidate the learning of the previous lesson, and/or prepare students for the next lesson. I am always happy to explain something numerous times if a student continues to find it difficult. Knowledge and understanding are different, and usually it's a small piece of 'knowledge' that is preventing a full 'understanding' of a topic.
