1. Allah (الله) The Arabic word for God. Appears over 2,500 times in the Qur'an. 2. Qur'an (القرآن) Literally means "The Recitation". Emphasizes its oral and memorized nature in addition to being a written book. 3. Ayah (آية) Means "sign" or "verse". Each individual line or verse in the Qur'an is called an ayah. There are over 6,000 ayahs. 4. Surah (سورة) A chapter of the Qur'an. There are 114 surahs, each with a unique name and topic. 5. Taqwa (تقوى) Often translated as God-consciousness or piety. A central concept throughout the Qur'an, referring to being aware of God and avoiding sin. 6. Jannah (جنة) Paradise or Heaven. Described vividly in the Qur'an as the reward for the righteous. 7. Jahannam (جهنم) Hell, the place of punishment for disbelievers and wrongdoers. 8. Iman (إيمان) Faith or belief. Refers to belief in Allah, His angels, books, messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree. 9. Shirk (شرك) Associating partners with Allah — the gravest sin in Islam. Strongly condemned in many verses. 10. Rahmah (رحمة) Mercy. One of Allah’s most emphasized attributes in the Qur’an — He is called Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful) and Ar-Raheem (The Especially Merciful).
