About Nic

I am an experienced tutor, having taught and performed professionally for over fifteen years. I love to teach mandolin to students of all levels, from beginner to advanced. I tailor my lessons individually to ensure you will get the most out of lessons, and that the approach I take suits my students' specific needs and natural musicality. I have taught mandolin and performed professionally for over fifteen years, touring extensively across Europe and the UK. My playing has been featured on BBC radio, and I've led numerous workshops on the mandolin and traditional music for all ages. My current projects include acclaimed folk group The Shackleton Trio with whom I've performed at major international festivals and stages for six years. I also occasionally perform alongside top UK clawhammer banjo player and BBC Folk Award nominee Dan Walsh. You can see me perform regularly in my hometown of Norwich with bluegrass band Cobbler Bob, and roots/acoustic group The Corncutters.

About the lesson

I have experience teaching one to one lessons with children and adults, as well as running group workshops on the mandolin, teaching a range of styles including folk, bluegrass, old time and jazz. I welcome players of any level from beginners to advanced, and can help develop tune playing, accompaniment, technique and reading music on the mandolin alongside the individual direction of any student's playing. Video and in person lessons are 45-50 minutes, following which I often send students relevant tablature/sheet music, short video links which detail specific exercises as well as general notes.

Perfect! My first lesson with Nic was great. He was very easy to talk to and it was a very relaxed environment. His instructions and teaching style is very straightforward and he is happy to pause and answer any questions you may have. He was organised with the lesson and had printouts and sheets which he gave me for homework and further learning. Very much looking forward to continuing our lessons together!

I have been having mandolin and mandola lessons with Nic for just over 5 years after my wife found an advert for him at our local folk club in Norwich and have not looked back since.
I could not have found a better tutor as although he is very professional musician in his own right ( Shackleton Trio . Clarke & Zuppardi, Cobbler Bob String Band ) and one of the busiest musicians on the scene at present, he is also a really excellent and professional teacher and goes way beyond the pale by being very friendly, down to earth, and encouraging and supportive of his students in not only teaching technique but by introducing students to different ideas and styles of playing, as well as other music, musicians and bands they may never have come across.
Apart from learning a great deal from him, he has instilled in me much more confidenceI and I very much enjoy his lessons and look forwards to them, and would consider him a good friend.
