About Carl

Carl Julien was born on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. He pursued his undergraduate education at Governors State He furthered his studies, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Carl's professional career in graphic design began to flourish after he completed his MFA. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent 14 impactful years. In Atlanta, Carl worked with a range of clients, from local businesses to major corporations.

Short Lesson Plan for Graphic Design Tutoring Class:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Graphic Design Principles

Objective:
Students will understand the fundamental principles of graphic design, including layout, color theory, typography, and composition.

Materials Needed:

Sketchbook or notebook
Laptop with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
Access to the internet for research and inspiration
Duration: 2 hours

Part 1: Understanding Design Principles (30 minutes)

Introduction to Graphic Design (10 minutes)

Define graphic design and its importance.
Discuss the role of a graphic designer in various industries.
Basic Design Principles (20 minutes)

Layout and Composition: Understanding grids, alignment, and balance.
Color Theory: Introduction to color wheel, harmony, and the psychological impact of colors.
Typography: Basics of fonts, typefaces, and readability.
Visual Hierarchy: How to guide the viewer's eye through a design.
Activity:

Analyze a selection of designs (magazines, posters, websites) and identify the design principles used.
Part 2: Hands-On Design Practice (1 hour)

Creating a Simple Design (20 minutes)

Choose a theme (e.g., event poster, social media graphic).
Sketch a rough layout focusing on the design principles discussed.
Digital Design Practice (40 minutes)

Illustrator Basics: Creating shapes, lines, and text.
Photoshop Basics: Working with layers, filters, and image adjustments.
