About Melissa

With over five years of tutoring experience, I have witnessed remarkable learning progress in every student I have worked with. By tailoring my approach to each individual's unique learning style, I have helped students unlock their full potential, enabling them to excel on tests and assessments - even in moments of self-doubt. One of the key strategies I used to foster academic improvement was providing structured learning materials, including textbook practice questions and answers, self-made PowerPoint lessons, and class handouts. Just as important was creating a supportive environment where students felt comfortable asking questions, allowing me to offer thorough explanations and clarify concepts as needed.

In addition to my tutoring experience, I also served as a teacher's assistant in a Grade 2 classroom, where I developed essential teaching skills. This role allowed me to observe and adapt to different learning styles, take on teaching responsibilities, and step in to direct the class when necessary. Witnessing the dynamic between teachers and students firsthand further reinforced my passion for education.

My name is Melissa, and I tutor K-12 students in science and math, covering everything from Grade 9 and 10 applied/academic courses to Grade 11 and 12 university/college-level chemistry and biology.

Throughout my own high school experience, I noticed that every student absorbs information differently - some learn best through auditory cues, others through visual aids, and some through hands-on problem-solving. Recognizing this early on helped me develop a flexible teaching approach that adapts to individual learning styles. Now, with extensive tutoring experience, I’ve deepened my understanding of how to personalize lessons to each student’s needs.

I work with patience and empathy, ensuring that every student feels supported and confident in their ability to learn. Together, we can turn challenges into achievements!

I really enjoyed tutoring Sienna for our first lesson! She has already demonstrated a better understanding of the different types of chemical reactions (synthesis, decomposition, single and double displacement, and combustion) and works well when we perform practice examples; she responds promptly to each of my questions. I can see that she is passionate about learning, so I hope to excel her knowledge further in various Grade 11 Chemistry concepts!

Naila appears to be great so far at the basic concepts of Organic Chemistry, such as naming and drawing straight-chain and cyclic alkanes. With more practice, however, she can begin memorizing prefixes, suffixes, and substituent numbering rules in regards to naming organic compounds. Good job Naila!
