• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I’ve had the privilege of being inspired by several role models, particularly teachers who left a lasting impact on my learning journey and shaped my approach to teaching.

One teacher who stands out was my high school economics instructor. She had an incredible ability to make even the most complex concepts—like inflation, market dynamics, and policy implications—feel relatable and exciting. What inspired me most was her passion for teaching and the way she connected textbook theories to real-world events, sparking my interest in economics. Her approach went beyond memorisation; she encouraged us to ask questions, think critically, and engage in meaningful discussions about the world around us.

Another significant role model was a university professor in finance who taught with a unique blend of academic rigour and real-world insights. He would use current financial news and case studies to bring lectures to life, showing how theoretical concepts like risk management or portfolio optimisation are applied in practice. His ability to simplify complexity, combined with his enthusiasm for the subject, motivated me to explore finance deeply and eventually pursue teaching and research in the field.

Lastly, my passion for teaching itself was influenced by a mentor during my early tutoring days. This individual emphasised the importance of patience, empathy, and adaptability when working with students. Watching them tailor their teaching style to each student’s needs taught me the value of understanding different learning approaches and fostering a supportive environment.

These role models not only inspired me academically but also shaped my belief that teaching is about igniting curiosity and empowering students to reach their potential. They instilled in me a passion for lifelong learning and a desire to pass that enthusiasm on to others.

• Share a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During high school, I struggled with understanding compound interest in my math and economics classes. While the formula seemed straightforward on paper, I couldn’t grasp how it worked in real life, which made the entire topic feel abstract and intimidating.

One day, our teacher asked a simple but thought-provoking question: "If you save a small amount of money every month, how much do you think it will grow by the time you’re 50?"

She handed us a hypothetical scenario: saving $50 per month with a 5% annual interest rate compounded monthly. We worked on the calculations step by step. As we solved the problem, she explained how this principle forms the foundation for savings accounts, investments, and even loan calculations. She then connected it to stories of people who used consistent investing to build wealth over time.

It was a turning point for me. For the first time, I realised that math wasn’t just numbers—it was a practical tool that could shape real financial outcomes. It sparked my fascination with finance and economics, showing me how abstract concepts like interest rates could impact lives.

This experience taught me two important lessons that I carry into my teaching today:

  1. Relating theory to real-life scenarios transforms learning.
When students see the relevance of a concept, they’re far more engaged and motivated to understand it.
  2. Struggles can lead to growth.
My initial difficulty with the topic made the eventual breakthrough even more rewarding and deepened my appreciation for learning.

Now, as a tutor, I strive to replicate that experience for my students. Whether it’s explaining financial concepts, economic theories, or technical IT tools, I always aim to show their real-world applications and inspire curiosity—just like my teacher did for me.

This story reminds me that even the most challenging topics can become fascinating with the right perspective, and it’s a philosophy I bring into every lesson I teach.

  - Challenge: Some topics, like advanced econometrics, complex financial derivatives, or programming for data analysis, can be highly technical and intimidating. They often require a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects, which takes time to build.
  - How I Address It: I break down these topics into smaller, manageable sections and focus on mastering the basics before tackling advanced concepts. Seeking help from mentors, peers, and online resources has also been invaluable.

  4. Time Management in Research

  - Challenge: Conducting research, especially interdisciplinary studies like my current project on ESG performance and stock price volatility, can be time-consuming. Balancing research with other responsibilities can be difficult.
  - How I Address It: I use project management tools to set clear goals and deadlines, prioritise tasks, and dedicate specific blocks of time to research. Staying organised has been key to managing my workload.

  5. Staying Motivated During Challenges

  - Challenge: At times, encountering complex problems or slow progress can feel frustrating, especially in fields like IT and finance that demand precision and attention to detail.
  - How I Address It: I remind myself of my long-term goals, celebrate small
achievements, and seek support from peers or mentors when I feel stuck. Taking breaks and maintaining a positive outlook also help me stay motivated.

These challenges have shaped my resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, ultimately making me a better learner, researcher, and teacher. Overcoming difficulties has also deepened my appreciation for the subjects I study and teach.
