About Ricky

I began playing the clarinet at the age of 7. I am now the principal clarinet of the University of London Symphony Orchestra. Before studying in the UK, I was the Principal Clarinet of the Hong Kong Youth Orchestra and Hong Kong Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and also appeared as guest principal in the Hong Kong Youth Philharmonia.

I completed LTCL performance diploma with distinction in 2017 at the age of 14. I was also passionate about organising musical events while studying at St.Paul’s College Hong Kong, including summer concerts and inter-school music exchanges. I was the concertmaster in the college's wind orchestra from the age of 14, and appeared as the soloist in his school’s tour to Japan in 2019 performing Viktor’s Tale and Danzon No.2 in the Kawaguchiko Stellar Theater. I was given the most outstanding instrumentalists Award in 2019 by the college giving the recognition to his contribution. I was the second-runner up of the 71st Hong Kong School Music Festival Woodwind Concerto Group in 2019 playing the Mozart Clarinet Concert.

I received the ‘EURONIA’ Special Award from Youth of Music International Classical Music Competition (2022). During summer 2022, I gave my debut solo recital in Hong Kong, then gave his UK debut in October. Recently, I got the first prize in the 2nd International Music Competition Małopolska 2022 and the World Classical Award 2022 Season IV. I am currently studying with Timothy Lines, Janet Hilton, Richard Hosford at the Royal College of Music.

About the lesson

Hi, I’m Ricky. I’m 22 and I come from Hong Kong, graduated at the Royal College of Music (BMus) in 2025. Now I am pursuing my study, Master of Performance (MPerf) at the Royal college of music.

I believe many of us will struggle when we start learning a new instrument (including myself), but when we start to enjoy playing it, we will improve and have motivation to practice.

I am a patient and enthusiastic teacher, through my lesson I hope you can step out of the comfort zone, enjoy playing clarinet and performing it in front of the audience.

In my lesson, we will start by playing some scales to warm up. Then we will look into the piece you are working on and before we finish I would like you to do some sight reading exercises. I am sure I will choose the suitable repertoire for you as too easy won’t keep you improving and too advanced cannot keep you motivated. For me, scales are essential as they reflect your finger technique and many repertories feature lots of scales, it will be faster and easier to learn a music if you can play the scales nice and neatly.

Besides English, I can also teach with Mandarin and my mother language Cantonese.
