About Melissa

I have taught in the Los Altos public schools as well as at private schools for over 30 years. I have tutored K-12 students needing enrichment and additional academic support. I have been the teacher of the year multiple times during my career and I have been a mentor teacher also. I am calm and patient but also firm. I know that the key to success is establishing connections with students so that they feel comfortable taking academic risks with me.

About the lesson

I can help your K-8 child or adult English Language Learner learn to read and comprehend a variety of texts. We will use those texts to write detailed essays with strong vocabulary and varied sentence structure.
My lessons will vary based on your needs but will be divided into 3-4 segments, each lasting 30 minutes, tailored to your needs. As an example of a lesson in general reading skills for a first grader, they will spend 15 minutes working on basic decoding and fluency skills, 20 minutes on reading comprehension,20 minutes on writing, and the last 5 minutes on vocabulary or grammar. For a 5th grader on writing, we would focus on outlining skills, drafting, revising for variety in sentence structure, and improving the vocabulary used. We might also focus on using stronger hooks or correctly paraphrasing so that they are not plagiarizing.
I have over 30 years of experience teaching in the Los Altos public schools and have been a master teacher, supporting new teachers during their first year as well as supporting university students in teacher credentialing programs
