About Elizabeth

My name is Elizabeth Pérez-Hickman, and I am a Venezuelan-American oboist currently pursuing my master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where I study with Sherry Sylar of the New York Philharmonic. I previously earned my Bachelor of Music degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University on full scholarship.

I have performed with professional ensembles including the New World Symphony and the Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and in venues ranging from the Library of Congress and the Hollywood Bowl to community spaces such as hospitals, museums, and libraries. My training also includes early studies at Interlochen Arts Academy as a full-scholarship student.

In addition to my performing career, I have several years of experience working with students through private lessons and preparatory programs. I value professionalism, clear communication, and creating a supportive environment that allows students to grow with confidence and consistency.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, experience level, and learning style. My teaching is grounded in building strong fundamentals and healthy technique, with focused work on tone production, breath support, articulation, finger technique, and musical phrasing. I emphasize clear problem-solving strategies and efficient practice habits so students feel confident and supported both in lessons and when they practice at home.

A typical lesson includes a balance of warm-ups, technical work, and repertoire. Depending on the student’s level and interests, this may include scales, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and audition preparation. For students interested in reed making, I can also incorporate basic reed-making principles and reed adjustment into lessons.

What sets my teaching apart is my conservatory training combined with a supportive, encouraging approach. I aim to create a lesson environment that is focused but positive, where students feel challenged while staying motivated and curious about their progress.

I work with beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, including pre-college musicians, college students, adult learners, and students preparing for youth orchestra placements or auditions. I also teach English horn and enjoy helping students expand their skills across related instruments.
