About Gadean

I am currently a full time intern for the National Research foundation working at Tygerberg medical campus within the Medical Virology department at Stellenbosch University. The research focuses on sudden unexpected death of infants. My research project includes; post-mortem sample collection and using molecular biology techniques to screen for viruses which form part of respiratory infections. Designing a Real-time PCR assay to sub type these viruses our work can be aligned to support the cause of death found by pathologists.

I am a post graduate at the University of The Western Cape; where I have completed my Master’s degree in Biotechnology. My research focuses on the Genetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA within Southern African populations by incorporating population genetics for forensic application. I present a High Resolution melting analysis screening method to assign individuals to populations with African or non-African descent.

These past few years has helped me gain the knowledge, experience, organizational and laboratory skills needed within a research field. My future plans include working within the Forensic and Molecular biology field, gaining experience and being competent in the work I will do. My passion, drive and ability to adapt and learn within the field whilst giving back to the community is what I stand for.

About the lesson

I was a tutor for the second year Genetics 2616 and Biology 1623 at UFS. My core responsibilities included working through tutorials and explaining the work to the students. Marking the tutorials and when necessary being present at their tests. I worked alongside other tutors, allowing me to practice management and communication skills whilst working in a team.

During 2017 and 2018, I was facilitating a first year module, ISC 153 at UWC. We assisted students in the writing and reading of Scientific journals. We helped students with making sense of what they write by teaching them annotation, writing skills, grammar, presentation, project proposals and essay writing. I gained experience in a leadership role, facilitating, presenting and teaching first year students within the Natural Science faculty.

I am a hard-working and honest person. I am reliable and loyal. The knowledge and skills I have gained these last few years will ensure that the work I have to do, meet the specific requirements. My experience in facilitating and teaching undergraduate students makes me the appropriate candidate for this position.
