My approach to tutoring is rooted in meeting students exactly where they are and helping them build both the skills and confidence they need to succeed. I focus on strengthening phonics, fluency, and comprehension while also supporting social-emotional behaviors and behaviors related to successful learning, because I believe students learn best when they feel supported, capable, and understood.

Teaching Methods and Techniques
I use a structured, research-based approach combined with flexibility and responsiveness. I identify students’ individual learning needs through diagnostic assessments, including the Core Phonics Assessment and leveled reading fluency passages with recall, to guide targeted instruction. I specialize in the Seeing Stars curriculum for orthographic processing, use UFLI to target phonics and decoding, implement repeated reading to build fluency and prosody, and apply research-based strategies to strengthen comprehension.

I consistently monitor student progress to ensure instruction is effective and responsive. I use data from fluency timings, accuracy rates, comprehension checks, and assessments such as Core Phonics and reading passages with recall to track growth over time. Progress is formally monitored every other week based on session frequency. Based on this data, I adjust instruction as needed—whether that means reteaching a skill, increasing complexity, or shifting focus. This allows me to provide targeted support while ensuring students are making meaningful, measurable progress.

A Typical Lesson Plan
A typical session follows a clear and consistent routine:

Targeted instruction in phonics, fluency, or comprehension
Guided practice with support and feedback
Independent practice to build confidence and skill application
Quick progress check and review

Lessons are paced to keep students engaged and successful while still being appropriately challenged.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What sets me apart is my dual focus on academics and behavior. With advanced training in Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, I understand how behaviors, emotions, and learning are connected. I don’t just teach reading skills—I also teach students how to stay engaged, manage frustration, and develop confidence as learners. I bring 18 years of experience working with struggling readers and students with diverse learning needs, and I know how to adjust instruction to help each student make meaningful progress.

I hold a Master’s degree in both Special Education and General Education and have experience teaching in special education resource and inclusion settings, as well as working with students who are English Language Learners. I currently serve as a Tier 3 MTSS reading and behavior intervention teacher. Within the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) framework, Tier 1 represents core instruction for all students, Tier 2 provides targeted support for students needing additional help, and Tier 3 is the most intensive level of intervention. At the Tier 3 level, my role is to provide highly individualized, data-driven instruction to help close learning gaps. When students do not respond to these interventions, I also support the process of referring them for comprehensive evaluation to determine if additional services are needed.

Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for students who need support in reading, particularly at the elementary and middle school levels, but I can adapt for a range of learners. This includes:

Students struggling with phonics, fluency, or comprehension
Students who are below grade level in reading
Students who need support with focus, motivation, or learning behaviors
Students who benefit from structured, step-by-step instruction

My goal is to help every student grow academically while also building the confidence and skills they need to become successful, independent learners.

Details

My hourly rate reflects the level of individualized, research-based instruction I provide, as well as my advanced degree and experience. Each session includes targeted intervention in phonics, fluency, and comprehension, along with support for focus, confidence, and learning behaviors. I also use diagnostic assessments and ongoing progress monitoring to ensure students are making meaningful, measurable growth.

I offer a free 30-minute initial session to get to know the student on a personal level and begin building rapport, as strong relationships are an important foundation for effective learning. This time also allows me to observe learning behaviors and begin understanding the student’s needs.

Developing these skills takes time, and meaningful progress will not occur from a single session. Consistent, ongoing sessions are necessary to support improvement and effectively close reading gaps.
