About Gavin

I graduated from Durham University where I earned my masters degree in mathematics and then subsequently achieved a PGCE in secondary mathematics from the University of Oxford.

Spending a year teaching students from year 7 to 13, I have taught in a class environment to many different learners and learning styles. One of my students came into my classroom at the start of the year unsure and unconfident of their ability, after a term of discovery and conversation, they admitted that having someone to bounce ideas off of and reassure them of their ability was jsut what they needed. I hope to show this enthusaism when tutoring!

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring mathematics prioritises deep conceptual understanding over rote memorisation. This can be done by extensive questioning on “why” we do methods and techniques, which help students build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This deep understanding also helps form strong connections between different topics and strengthens the logical thinking required in mathematics and beyond.
Thus, sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of each unique learner. Prioritising their learning styles and creating an environment best suited to adapt for their improvement. Sessions are curated to be accessible yet challenging, and a typical session would introduce a concept and I would scaffold the tasks into securing that knowledge. This is an active interaction where guidance and feedback are paramount for both me to know where misconceptions are arising from as well as to provide students the confidence to continue.
