About Ashraf

I have over than 20 years of teaching experience. I have an average of 30 students per class. I am a lecturer at Cal Poly State University 3 years ago. The feedback of my students is great. Teaching is not only to convey academic information to students, but also to make them realize the important of science, how to conduct research, and how to tackle engineering problems. My ultimate goal is to foster students' scientific collaboration, love of learning, discovery, deepest observation, and physical sensing of engineering quantities.

I have categorized my teaching philosophy to the following approaches:

• Assessment of understanding. I use various assessment tools like H.W. Quizzes, exams and minute paper and ask the students to do self-perception survey to evaluate their understanding. At the end of each chapter, I was asking the students to create videos to explain concepts that I taught in the class or search for engineering applications that use these concepts.
• Teaching Style and Interactive Learning. When I was teaching Engineering Dynamics ME-212 at Cal Poly State University, I divided my lecture to 25 minutes for lecture, 10 minutes for discussion regards what I explained in the lecture and the last 15 minutes, I assign a quiz or classify the section to groups to create activities to be sure that the students understand the explained concepts in the lecture. Case studies and group projects allow students to learn from one another, encourage interpersonal skills, and foster creative thinking. Also, allowing students to congratulate their friends having special days to break the ice among the diverse students. In future classes, I would like to incorporate facility tours and outside speakers into my course design.

• Continuous Improvement. Continuous improvement of my teaching through feedback from students is an important indicator of my effectiveness. I continuously take feedback from my students in class, during my office hours or through the final course evaluation. For example one of the comments in the students' evaluation was that I might give more details about certain topics in my office hours and this may force the students to come the office hours and I have handled and managed this point by changing the lecture plan and I have created more detailed notes during the lecture. Also, I asked for feedback throughout class by distributing anonymous questionnaires and verbally inquiring about the course through informal discussions outside of class. I am eager to participate in workshops of Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) at California Polytechnic State University and Helwan University in Egypt to improve my teaching skills and grow professionally in my career. In addition, I believe in adapting course materials each semester by trying new ways to present concepts that did not work well or by adding new topics and examples to enhance the course.

• Matching Between Theoretical Study and Engineering Applications. I believe students do not learn principals and physical laws as a result of me simply lecturing on it, but that true learning takes place when I show how these laws are applied in real life engineering problems. In order to teach students the importance of team work, I give some assignments to small groups of students to get a flavor of how to work in teams in an engineering firm. I teach my students how to make models of real life problems in order to expose to problems where they must find information and data broadly rather than narrowly from their required textbooks. Most of these projects are presented in a written or an oral presentation format so that students can share their ideas, encourage each other with their excitement and practicing the important skills of effectively communicating technical information. I promote in my students a sense of responsibility, professionalism, ethics, and dedication in work. Moreover, foster analytical and scientific thinking to my students for solving problems of an increasingly technologically-driven lifestyle.

• Inquiry-Based Learning and Learning by Doing. I believe an important professor teaching responsibility is to provide students with the main concepts, knowledge, skills and experience necessary so that they gain the required professional skills needed to pursue their desired career path. Attitudes, skills, and insights developed and acquired at this time are the template for the rest of their years in a demanding and rewarding profession. I have found that the best way for me to achieve these objectives is to root my classroom in inquiry-based learning that requires making the students active participants as much as possible. I believe that, students tend to learn fundamental concepts better when they know they will soon be asked to apply them to problems they find important and relevant.

• Professor Accessibility. To foster learning, I believe a professor should be as approachable as possible. To encourage this, I arrived early to class and made an effort to acquaint myself with the students in my class. Additionally, I provided a classroom environment where asking questions was rewarded. Ultimately, students are accountable for their own learning; however, as a teacher, I have a responsibility to be accessible and to create a comfortable learning environment where students can succeed.
