About Alison
Hi there,
My name is Alison, and I have both a bachelors and masters in education. I taught for 20 years, most of which were middle school English, but more recently 5th and 6th grade ELA and math. I have also tutored math up to Algebra I. During most of the years I taught, I was a lacrosse and hockey coach.
I am currently taking classes for a second masters in counseling and I'm tutoring a handful of students in and around my town. I have tutored for 25 years (I started when I was in college).
My clients enjoy working with me because I truly get them and how their brains work and process information. I've had students tell me they feel comfortable working with me, appreciate how I can reword information to help them understand a question, and also that I have a sense of humor that can lighten the mood, if needed. And of course, that I have helped them improve in their classes. One recently told her mother that they need me on speed dial!

Math can be difficult and make some students feel like they are "bad at math," when often, they just need the information explained a different way and they need more time to process the steps. This is exactly what happened to me when I got to 6th/7th grade; I didn't process the questions nearly as fast as other people, therefore, I took a little longer to get an answer; when others would shoot their hands in the air with an answer, I started to learn that if I couldn't figure it out fast, I should give up. This, of course, was not true! I realize now that I needed more one on one attention and more visuals to help with concepts.
My approach to helping students with math is to help them see that math is hard, but that doesn't mean they are "bad at math." If you are willing to try new methods and put in the work, I will help you see that you can improve your math concepts and your confidence when you are in class.
As I wrote in my English ad, I'm patient and quickly understand learning styles to help my students/clients feel safe to ask questions and to let go of/learn from mistakes. This helps them have a better mindset when trying to focus on new material or recall past lessons, and also helps boost overall confidence when they are in school.
My lesson plans are catered to what each individual needs depending on the subject, skill, and/or homework assignment. I use visuals as needed, and will provide many examples depending on what you need. Once I have determined your learning style and the best way you process information, I will adjust lessons to accommodate your needs based on homework, an upcoming assessment, or general practice problems on any concepts.

Alison was one of my favorite teachers I’ve had. She was amazing at connecting with her students and she used this to make her lessons extremely engaging. Her classes were always interesting, and as much fun as we had in them, we learned even more. She is an excellent English teacher and mentor, and I highly recommend learning from her.
I had Miss Soule as my 6th grade teacher/advisor. She’s kind, fun, comforting, helpful, and took the time to connect with all her students. I could go to her for anything, whether it was school-related or just life; she was always there to help me. Miss Soule is by far one of my favorite teachers I’ve ever had. Her down-to-earth and vibrant personality made learning so fun for me.
My son met Alison in 5th grade. There was an immediate mutual connection with trust, respect, and understanding of his academic challenges. Over the past 5 yrs, he has always looked to Alison for guidance and is certainly in a better place because of their time working together.
Alison has an engaging and effective tutoring style. My daughter enjoys meeting with her to work on homework, and Alison always makes extra time when needed. I feel like she truly cares about my daughter’s academic and emotional successes.
Alison Soule was my 8th grade teacher and advisor during my time at Thayer Academy. She is the kind if teacher that takes extra care with her students, and will drop everything to give extra help when needed. She holds her students accountable to the goals they want to achieve, and beyond. She is supportive, kind, and will absolutely keep your students on track for understanding lesson material. She is a supporter through and through! She also understands the craziness that IS being a student, and juggling a million different interests, activities, sports, and passions. She leads any educational setting with humor, intriguing conversations, and has no problem with keeping her students involved in her lesson plans.
Alison taught me in middle school and has made such an indelible impact on my life - she has truly shaped me into the person I am today. She takes on the role of both a teacher and mentor, taking a genuine interest in her students' success and well-being not just as a student, but as a person. Alison makes learning fun - she is welcoming and collaborative, while simultaneously empowering her students to be the best version of themselves.
Ms. S was my eighth grade teacher and a continuous supporter throughout my high school and college career. She meets you where you're at - specifically with finding strategies to help you learn. I would meet with her for topics I was confused on and instead of simply explaining them to me she showed me different tricks and habits I could implement to help me understand and become a better student. She helped me to figure out what kind of learner I am and how to customize my studying and school work to that. To this day, I still use study strategies that she taught me. She is tremendously understanding and truly cares. She wants you to do well and to succeed and she will work her hardest until you do. She is also super fun and easy to get along with, I am always laughing with her and that makes learning more fun. I am forever appreciative of Ms. S's devotion to helping me grow as a student and discovering how I learn best.
Alison was one of my favorite teachers in middle school. Her contributions to my personal growth were equally as significant as her influence on my academic achievement. Due to my learning disability, I struggled academically to understand a number of English concepts. Despite this, Ms. Soul persevered and continued to explore various strategies until she discovered one that eventually made sense to me. For example, I have always had trouble with reading comprehension. I recall how Ms. Soul took the extra time and interest to speak with me about those challenging sections and how she truly took the time to help me analyze them. I can easily recall Ms. Soul taking the time out of her busy schedule to help me review and ultimately understand the difficult passages in the novels we were reading. Additionally, Ms. Soul has taught me numerous useful reading strategies and techniques that help me better understand what I'm reading and how to communicate my ideas. I have been using these particular strategies throughout high school as well as throughout my undergraduate studies. In my experience, these simple techniques lend me a competitive edge over other college students who did not have access to the knowledgeable instructors I was fortunate enough to have early in my education. Overall, Ms. Soul is a very intelligent teacher, but what really sets her apart from the others is her genuine passion to see her students succeed and become happy, successful adults.
Alison was my 8th grade teacher. She is incredibly talented at breaking down difficult topics. She never took herself too seriously as her class was always fun and challenging at the same time. She truly excelled at building personal relationships with her students and was definetly a school favorite! Students always looked forward to seeing her in the hallways, and would race to sign up for her classes.
I was so lucky to have Ms. Soule as a 6th grade teacher and advisor. She went above and beyond to create a supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment. She was so dedicated to us, and I could tell she truly cared so much about all of her students. She would go out of her way to explain the material as many times as I needed until I fully understood. She was so welcoming and made class something I looked forward to everyday! I am so grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of Ms. Soule’s class!!
Alison was my daughter’s fifth grade teacher, and I can’t say enough wonderful things about her as a teacher, person and friend. I recently found pictures of several notes my daughter had given to Alison. ‘You made learning fun and made us laugh every day!’ ‘You taught me skills that I will hold on to for my whole life.’ ‘If I had a dollar for every beneficial skill / tip that you taught me, I would be rich!’
Well, my daughter is not rich, but she did graduated 8th grade as the Top Scholar. Alison was a huge part of getting her there!!Ms. Soule ( Alison) was my English teacher in fifth grade. She taught me a lot of what I know now, for she provided me a great base of knowledge in fifth grade through grammar, writing practice, and many other ideas. I would recommend her to any students who want to make learning enjoyable and any students who would like to learn a lot.
Alison (a.k.a. Ms. S) was my teacher when I was in middle school and then she was my tutor for a few years after that when she moved to another state. We met on zoom and I wasn't sure I would like it since remote learning was tough for me. But, Ms. S made it so easy and I think because I already knew her so well, that made me more comfortable. She helped me so much when she was my teacher with reading skills and just getting my thoughts on paper without worrying how it sounded. We can always go back and change things, she would say. When I was having trouble with some Algebra concepts, she would explain them a different way so that I know what to do. Math's still tough for me, but I use the tricks she taught me all the time. I give her 10 stars (out of 5)!.
