I like to understand the reason the student has sought out tutoring: acing an upcoming exam, catching up, or just general revision. Then after discussion with the student, I create a lesson plan which usually begins from the basics, to what they find challenging, to high yield questions, and on to the really difficult, top scorer questions. I think it's really important for students to know how they like to learn and what works best for them and then tailor plans accordingly.
