About Anita
I am a McGill music student with a psychology minor who has been teaching privately since 2014. I have performed in Montreal and globally on prestigious stages over 30 times within the past two years. I train intensively under my guru Prof. Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick of the Darbhanga gharana in Allahabad, India, and have 14 years of training in opera, classical piano, Hindustani vocal, and Kathak dance. Notably, I have performed, and continue to perform at the Tanna Schulich Hall upon the invite of Prof. Shawn Mativetsky, and am the first to bring Hindustani vocal performance to McGill.

I tailor my teaching method to each student. I am incredibly passionate about teaching and believe everyone can learn if taught effectively! A typical class would kick-off with “Kharaj” practice, a review of the previous lesson and corrections on what the student has been practicing so far. I do give written notation until the student is able to learn by ear, and pitches are practiced with the use of the tanpura (drone instrument) only. I use the harmonium as a crutch when students struggle with pitch. New material will be added once the student is comfortable with the old material and questions are always welcome! Students will be given a syllabus including what will be covered each season. These classes are meant for beginners of all ages in Hindustani vocal.
