About Tendekai Billy
From Special Class - to -> Passing Engineering With Distinctions
Let me be completely honest with you.
I didn't start out as a top student. In primary school, I was placed in a special class for slow learners. In high school, my Grade 11 marks were so poor that I couldn't even apply to university. I had to take a gap year just to fix my mistakes.
But I refused to stay there. I taught myself how to study effectively, built discipline, and worked my way up. I eventually earned distinctions in my Mechanical Engineering degree, led my entire faculty @Tuks, chaired the SAIMechE student chapter, and represented Zimbabwean students on campus.
Here's what that means for you:
1* To the struggling student: I know exactly how you feel. I've sat where you're sitting, feeling like everyone else gets it and you don't. But I also know that you are not your marks. I turned my situation around completely, and I can help you do the same.
2* To the high achiever: You're already doing well— but you want more. You want distinctions, not just passes. I've been there too. I know the study techniques, exam strategies, and mindset shifts that separate the "good" from the "great." Let me share them with you.
I've been mentoring students since 2020, and my greatest joy is watching someone who once hated maths start to actually enjoy solving problems. If impostor syndrome has been telling you that you don't belong in STEM, let me help you prove it wrong.
You are capable of so much more than you think. I'm living proof of that. Let me help you become yours.

My Teaching Philosophy: Foundation First
Mathematics and physics aren't just subjects to pass, they are the universal languages that describe how our world works. My goal isn't to help you survive the exam; it's to help you see the logic behind the formulae so that learning becomes intuitive, not memorised. I know what it feels like to just aim for a pass, I was there in high school. But I also know the strategies that take you far beyond that.
My Methodology (How I Teach):
I use a "Understand, Apply, Master" framework:
Understand: We break down the concept using real-world examples.
Apply: We work through problems together. I don't just give you the answer; I ask guiding questions to help you arrive at it yourself.
Master: You attempt problems independently while I watch your approach, correcting bad habits in real-time.
I believe there is no such thing as a "stupid question"— only unasked ones. My classroom is a judgement-free zone where we tackle your impostor syndrome head-on.
A Typical Lesson Outline (1-Hour Session):
1* First 5 mins: "The Check-In." We review your week, address any homework struggles, and set a clear goal for today's session.
2* Next 15 mins: "The Concept." I introduce the new topic with simple analogies and a step-by-step breakdown.
3* Next 25 mins: "Guided Practice." We tackle 3-4 exam-style questions together, starting easy and progressively getting tougher.
4* Next 10 mins: "The Challenge." You solve one problem entirely on your own while I observe, building your exam confidence.
5* Final 5 mins: "The Recap." We summarise the key takeaway and I set a small, focused task for you to try before our next session.
Important Information for Students:
Materials: Please have a notebook, pen, calculator, and your current textbook/syllabus ready. For online sessions, a stable internet connection and a tablet (or just paper and a pen) work perfectly.
Homework Policy: I give short, targeted practice questions after each session— not to overwhelm you, but to solidify what we learned. We review these at the start of the next lesson.
Cancellation: Just give me at least 4 hours' notice so we can reschedule. Life happens, and I understand that!
Languages I Teach in:
I am fluent in "English, Shona, and Zulu" . If you are more comfortable explaining a tricky calculus problem in your mother tongue, we can absolutely do that!
