About Donal

I am a first year medicine student at the university of manchester. I achieved 2A*s and 2As at A level, with the two A*s in Biology and Maths and the two As in Physics and Chemistry.
I have experience informally tutoring in GCSE higher level Maths and Physics, as well as AS level Maths and Physics with a small number of students over the course of two years. I can provide more detail if needed and was able to raise their grades by a significant margin.
I am extremely hardworking and on top of my A level results, I am an experienced care assistant in a carehome. This is relevant as it has honed my communication skills to an extreme degree which has allowed me to become extremely confident in my tutoring skills.
On top of this, I am intensely interested in my own personal learning and spend hours a day pouring through scientific studies on topics that interest me. This has created an extremely nuanced understanding of the world around us for me and has allowed me to link the knowledge that I learnt from school together and truly understand how it fits in the world. Due to this interlinking knowledge base, I make a great teacher in a wide variety of topics and can formulate explanations at essentially any skill level for students on any topic that I am well versed in.

About the lesson

I will personally tailor my approach to the student that I am teaching. I am very patient as a person and will take as long as it takes for the student to understand the topic. Due to my background as a care assistant (which involves working closely with many coworkers and residents alike) I am very personal/agreeable, which I believe makes all the difference in a teaching role, since the student will not want to listen to someone they do not get along with.
I believe that everyone is intelligent and everyone deserves to understand the topics that they wish to learn. My focus is more on finding what learning style works for the student and to then improve their understanding of the subject, rather than to encourage rote learning. I believe that rote learning without understanding will sap the student's will to learn the subject and therefore take away from their overall ability in the subject. This is a problem that I saw often in school, as many of my peers suffered from burnout or believed themselves not smart as they were encouraged to rote learn/memorise huge portions of information, only to regurgitate it onto a page with no understanding of what they were saying.
By focusing on the understanding of the subject (something that I will achieve by continually checking in on the student by asking them to repeat back in their own words what is being taught to them) as well as asking targeted questions (questions aimed to fill any gaps in the student's knowledge by getting them to think about the answer rather than repeating back something I have said), I am certain that I can improve the student's understanding of a topic; therefore greatly increasing their ability in the subject. This approach has worked well for me personally in school when done by teachers, and for me when I worked informally as a tutor. I believe it works so well as it keeps the student engaged and at least somewhat entertained, and will feel a lot less like work.
I believe in setting work for the student outside of the classroom, but I also do not believe in harshly enforcing that this work needs to be done. Forcing a student to work is one of the main ways that burnout is caused, and therefore this is something I will avoid. Work will be set by me that I will encourage the student to complete in their own time to further their understanding, but I will get all relevant work done within the lesson and therefore all homework set will be purely extra work to be done at leisure.
