About Jennifer
I am a singing tutor with 6 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Studies alongside postgraduate training in mindfulness-based stress reduction from a university medical department and further training in somatic movement and voice practices. I have taught over 195 students and I bring a combination of performance pedagogy and wellness practice to my teaching that is genuinely unusual in the field. My personal experience of significant performance anxiety during my own singing training — which I resolved through the very practices I now teach — gives my work with anxious singers an empathy and specificity that clinical approaches alone cannot provide.

My vocal teaching is rooted in mindfulness and somatic awareness practices, and I have developed an approach that addresses the physical and psychological dimensions of singing at least as seriously as the technical ones. I begin every lesson with a body scan and breath awareness practice that takes five minutes and transforms the quality of what follows because students arrive from busy lives with physical tension and mental noise that directly compromises vocal function and artistic availability. My approach to vocal technique is somatic rather than mechanical — I teach students to develop awareness of the sensations associated with healthy, free vocal production rather than applying external corrective rules, because sensation-based awareness produces more lasting change than instruction-based compliance. Performance anxiety is addressed as a central rather than peripheral concern in my teaching and I have developed a specific programme covering the physiology of anxiety, the techniques for managing its physical symptoms, the cognitive strategies for redirecting its mental effects, and the gradual exposure approaches that build genuine performance confidence over time. Authentic expression in singing — the ability to convey genuine feeling rather than performed emotion — is taught through exercises that develop the singer's personal emotional and imaginative relationship with the music they are singing, including improvisation, personal story connection, and movement-based approaches to emotional access. Breath awareness is central to my somatic approach — students develop a detailed and conscious understanding of their breathing cycle as the foundation of vocal freedom. My group sessions for singers with performance anxiety have developed into a programme that I run termly and that has had transformative effects for many participants. My teaching goal is a singer who walks onto a stage and feels genuinely at home in their own voice.
