About Murray

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have experience in all the experimental techniques in chemical research, i.e. mass spectrometry, UV spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, wet chemistry techniques, column chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, HPLC, gas chromatography, capillary gas chromatography, and stereoselective organic synthesis. Subsequent to work at the University of Reading I also spent 5 years working in the field of the chemical formulation of aerosolised disinfectant and surfactant formulations, and the biocidal testing of disinfectant formulation according to BS EN standards. I am still involved in the formulation and screening of novel aqueous disinfectant products across the spectrum of disease causing micro-organisms. Therefore my experience does not only relate to chemistry, but to biology and the complex interaction between biology and chemistry (biochemistry). I am equally at home teaching biology and chemistry. At the University of Stellenbosch I had to study high level mathematics to compliment studying chemistry and physics, therefore I am able to teach mathematics at A-level as well.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

University of Stellenbosch in South Africa
University of Nottingham in United Kingdom

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I command an impressive list of in excess of 55 students which I have taught over the past 4 years, predominantly in the Hampshire area. Any prospective student of mine has access to any of my previous students or their parents if they wish to speak to them. I normally just forewarn my parents/students that someone might call them which sometimes takes a day or two for them to respond.

It has always been my dream to see young people realise their dreams, and nothing makes me more happy to see students excited about their academic results and being allowed to study at a tertiary institution of their choice.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology from Key stage 3 to A level. I also teach mechanical mathematics up to AS level and Physics up to GCSE level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I was educated to a PhD degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the prestigious University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Previous to my Ph.D I completed my BSc. degree in Chemistry, a Honours BSc. degree in Chemistry, and a MSc. degree in Polymer Science at the same University. I completed a DSc. at the University of Nottingham in 2001-2002 where I worked on stereoselective polypeptide synthesis. I subsequently worked at the Technology Centre at the University of Reading and was engaged in the stereoselective and regioselective synthesis of synthetic prostaglandins (prostanoids). I published 6 papers in International peer review journals in chemistry during my experimental chemistry career.

- How much do you charge?

The fees I charge for different subjects are on my profile. I travel up to 10 miles to my students at a minimal charge of £3.95. In the event where I have to travel further I organise a transport fee with my clients. The duration of my lessons is never 60 minutes, but predominantly 75 minutes. I have group lessons with no more than 3 students. If I have 2 or 3 students per lesson I offer 20% discount on my normal tuition fees per student. I prefer not to teach group lessons with more than 3 students.

- Where do you teach?

I prefer to teach at the home of my students as this is a familiar environment for them. I can also teach in a public setting, for example a local library etc.

- When are you available?

I am available weekdays, during the early afternoon from 12H00. I normally start my last lesson no later than 20H00 in the evening. I am also available on Saturday afternoons and early evenings. I am also available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students from year 8 (Key stage 3) right up to year 12 and year 13. I also teach students for the 7+, 11+ and 13+ mathematics entrance examinations for private schools.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE mathematics (IGCSE, Edexcel, OCR, AQA)
GCSE Science (Triple Science: OCR, 21'st Century, Edexcel IGCSE, Edexcel and, AQA)
GCSE Science (Double Science: AQA, Edexcel)
Chemistry AS (Edexcel, AQA, OCR(GCE), OCR(Gateway))
Chemistry A-level (Edexcel, AQA, OCR(GCE), OCR (Salters)
Mathematics AS (Edexcel, OCR(MEI), OCR, AQA)
Mathematics A-level( Edexcel, OCR(MEI), OCR, AQA)
Biology AS (WJEC, AQA)

I can also teach my students Afrikaans as a language.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have access to Skype and can conduct eye to eye lessons with students if they so prefer. I provide them, with the permission of their parents, with my Skype address and they invite me as a friend before we can proceed. I however prefer to travel to my students and teach them directly, the internet is slightly impersonal in my opinion.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Whatever you do and how you choose to study, if you feel discouraged or frustrated, remember if you only realise how near you were to success if you did give up, you never would have. When it seems that no-one cares, remember there are people who care and who can help you. In choosing subjects, choose those you are good at, those you are interested in. Do not choose subjects to your parents or friends want you to do. Remember you are going to work in that area of study, not your parents or your friends. Be true to yourself and listen to your heart. Listen to advice of those older than you, but then make your own informed decisions. Never give up on your dreams, but make sure your dreams are realistic.
