About Declan
Initially coming from a background of rock and pop music, I started developing my skills and interest in classical piano playing at the age of fourteen. After several months of practice, I started to appear in local festivals, and even attended the Chetham’s International Piano Summer School to learn from some of the most distinguished piano teachers in the country. I have developed my interest in playing classical piano music throughout my time as a music undergraduate at Oxford, extending this to performing with the Oxford University Sinfonietta, pursuing roles as an accompanist and rehearsal pianist, and even writing my own music for the piano. Before my final year, I taught a student of Grade 5 level, and have previously delivered seminars on film composition and sound production at my sixth form. Each of these experiences has allowed me to communicate my own expertise in a productive way that encourages others to approach music with an open and imaginative mindset. This is a rewarding endeavour that I intend to continue throughout an MMus in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

These piano lessons engage with students’ musical imagination as well as developing their technique. After warming up with some light scales or sight-reading challenges (depending on the style of the performer), my approach to a student’s repertoire undergoes various technical and interpretive exercises. This includes the basics of playing passages with hands separate, while also encouraging thought processes that view pieces in relation to historical context or musical structure - sometimes, I even ask my students to imagine how pieces would sound if written for orchestra. These lessons always have room for discussion, ensuring that the student’s interests and creative voice are always the priority.
